Our Values

Access to electricity must be seen as a basic human right

Access to affordable energy in many ways is an ensurance that every person has the opportunity to live with dignity and equality. It is not a luxury but a necessity for survival and growth in our interconnected world. By recognizing and acting on this, we can create a more just, inclusive, and thriving global society.

Providing communities with power offers an escape from poverty through better education, improved health care or advanced agricultural technology like irrigation systems and heaters. It allows people to look beyond their primary needs of food, shelter, warmth and clean water

Street lights may improve safety, letting women and girls leave their homes at night. Indoor heating means people can spend less time looking for firewood. Lights allow children to study or learn to read after the sun goes down

Access to electricity means empowerment

It enables communities to lift themselves out of poverty by starting businesses, accessing educational resources, and participating in the digital economy. It's a foundation for sustainable development and resilience, especially in the face of climate change and natural disasters

The lack of reliable electricity exacerbates systemic poverty and social inequity

Children can't study after dark, clinics can't refrigerate life-saving medications, and families can't stay informed about emergencies or even charge a phone to call for help. It's more than an inconvenience; it's a barrier to essential human rights

Renewable energy sources don’t contribute to climate change or pollution

This is a crucial benefit for underserved communities, many of which already bear the brunt of intense droughts, poor air quality and frequent natural disasters.

Puerto Rico’s 2017 Hurricane Maria

After the hurricane destroyed Puerto Rico's power grid, the island’s infrastructure fell apart, and entire towns went dark. In the wake of the destruction, those who had access relied on gas and diesel generators, while the majority of the Island's inhabitants were forced to navigate a dangerous landscape of leaning power poles, fallen trees and other debris without any access to power.

This is a perfect example of how disasters impact energy infrastructure. When the storm destroyed the island’s fossil fuels backed power grid, much of the island went without electricity for nearly a year. People decided to rebuild using renewable energy sources. In the wake of a cholera outbreak, residents began turning to solar powered washing machines and other renewable energy based solutions to combat the devastation. At the Kind Sun Initiative, we aim to build off of this turn towards innovative clean energy solutions to help mitigate and future proof the island against the effects of natural disasters and climate-related catastrophes.
