At Solaris Americanus: the Kind Sun Initiative, our mission is to harness solar power to combat systemic poverty by fostering energy independence, illuminating lives, and protecting our planet.
The world is currently at a point where older solar panels, replaced due to reduced efficiency and the advent of new technology, are being discarded on an industrial scale while still retaining at least 80% of their original efficiency. This adds to waste and exacerbates the ecological crisis.
Meanwhile, millions of people either lack access to electricity or cannot afford it due to high energy costs and economic challenges. Those who can often resort to fossil fuels to keep the lights on. Used solar panels have the potential to address this aspect of our climate crisis, support the expansion of decentralized micro-grids that enhance energy resiliency during natural disasters, reduce dependency on fossil fuels, and uplift people from poverty.
Our efforts began in Puerto Rico, a U.S. territory with a poverty rate more than twice that of the mainland’s poorest state and the highest number of households without reliable access to electricity. We have recently extended our outreach to Dominican Republic, Colombia, and Panama.
Together, we aim to build a brighter, more equitable future under the kind sun, reducing waste and fostering resilience across the region.
